The Virtual Side of Writing

The coronavirus pandemic has affected the world in ways I never thought possible only a few months ago. All of us have learned, or are learning, how to live under the constant threat of infection, social distancing, wearing masks, stay-at-home orders, and washing hands more than any sane person has ever done…ever.

The life of an author when putting together a manuscript or short story is, more often than not, a solitary experience. Some authors balance this time alone with time spent attending conferences and workshops, something I call “community time.” These in-person events give me a chance to learn from, and network with, other writers.

With many conferences and workshops already cancelled for 2020, and with many more on the verge of being cancelled, I have found a way to continue my community time. Through the generosity of individual writers and writers’ groups across the country, I have found webinars to be an excellent replacement for in-person events. In the last six weeks, I have “attended” three such webinars, with no cost to attend. You’ll find each one listed on the Events page. Not only have I learned something about writing by taking part in each one, I have also been able to “see” and talk to other authors dealing with the same uncertainty in today’s world.

I encourage everyone to search the Internet for any online events that may help you become a better writer. Whether they are conferences, workshops, or YouTube videos, and whether they are free or might cost a few dollars to attend, look far and wide to find whatever it is you may need to get words down on the page.

Stay healthy, be safe, and keep writing.
