It’s my clumsy way of saying “I like to read mysteries and I like to write mysteries.” The Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald hooked me. Then it was on to the Kinsey Millhone series by Sue Grafton, and continues now with the Longmire series by Craig Johnson. They are three of my favorite authors, but by no means are they the only authors I read. If you were to browse the shelves in my personal library, mysteries comprise most of what you would see.
Learning the genre before I began writing seemed like a good plan, and that meant reading lots of mysteries by lots of authors. Lots of very good authors, such as CJ Box. As a reader, I discovered those authors I most enjoyed reading, but that didn’t prevent me from picking up a book written by someone I had never heard of before. I like to read mysteries. I’m also a mystery writer, working hard to perfect my craft. One of these days I hope to be one of those authors whose book you pull off the shelf and say, “I think I might like this.” In the meantime, if you’re looking for a good mystery, try reading something by one of these excellent writers…
